    So, I've not tried this yet, I was actually in the middle of removing the engine, 17.5 hp 500cc b&s on a troy bilt pony. Was looking up videos on removing/repairing it when I ran across your video. Now considering putting the carb and everything else back on and try this temporary band aid. Question tho.... the last time I ran it, it suddenly revved up then began surging. I finished the lawn then ordered new carburetor, plug, filters, and got some sea-foam for the fuel. Replaced all that, went to start it, and wham! Wouldn't turn over. Pulled the plug and it spun no problem, also there wasn't any fuel coming out when I removed it, so I don't think it's an issue with fuel and must be compression, but that's just a guess because I really don't know much about these engines. My question is, given the symptoms I mentioned prior to parking it to repair, and the engine locking up, also when I turn it with plug out when it reaches compression it sounds like a horn softly honking coming from the breather tube, is that normal? Anyway, given all that, anyone have an idea what it could be? The root cause, problem. Thank you, anyone, for any insight

    07 Si owner that just did this. Not an easy task. You don't need to move the alternator at all to loosen the compressor bolts so long as you have swivel socket tips, and the long nose snap pliers are a must. Seriously. Get someone to help you hold the compressor/keep it twisted so you can work on it because we have a lot less clearance than the other civics. Used the OEM shim and new snap rings. $40 clutch kit and 5 or so hours. That all being said, if you can get a shop to just vacuum the system and take out the compressor to replace the clutch for cheap, go that route because they can easily have it done in half the time that way. Fantastic video thank you!

    My friends Murano, hit the brakes and it's a ton of vibration, the rotors are only 18 months old, but I know they are toast. Should we go with Rock Auto replacement, or carbon fiber from Rock Auto or go OEM ? (130+, 206+, 400 for parts,r espectively). Anything I recommend will be an improvement, but whoever did the last job, she only got 18 months from it.

    • @FastFixYouTube
      @FastFixYouTube 6 днів тому

      Hello there! Wow, 18 months is on the low side. This could be due to cheap parts (likely) or if your friend is hard on the brakes. Either way, I almost always go with OEM. My experience with aftermarket brakes has always been a let down, no matter if I bought the most expensive or the cheapest. I’d give the OEM parts a try if you’re looking for longevity. Best of luck!

    • @FastFixYouTube
      @FastFixYouTube 6 днів тому

      Also, if I’m reading your comment correctly, the OEM parts are $400? If so, shop around. OEM will generally be more pricey, but there are websites that carry OEM stuff and can usually be found cheaper than if buying from the dealership.

As far as the rear door lock, I have not personally had any experience with them, but I’d start with removing the door panel and inspecting the connections. @FastFixUA-cam so I spoke to soon. I'm actually enrolled in a tech school taking engine repair and basic electrical right now and was able to experience first hand the complications and pros and cons of valve lapping the day after I posted that comment and I will say valve lapping is a pain in the ass...wet or not wet that suction cup will only stick if it wants to regardless if ur doing it by hand or with the drill 😀

    • @FastFixYouTube
      @FastFixYouTube 4 дні тому

      Hahaha, well I’m glad I wasn’t the only one having issues 😂😂😂. Several people say to chuck the valve stem in a drill and do it that way. The issue I see with this is scratching the valve stem in the drill chuck. Some people use brass chucks to resolve this issue, but I have no idea where to acquire those. Anyway, best of luck at tech school! That’s awesome man!

    • @earthling1984
      @earthling1984 6 днів тому

      @@deep1983 No, but to be fair I did also look up my vehicle history on CarFax after doing the drain and fill. It was a single owner before me (which I knew), it was bought and serviced at the same Honda dealership it was bought at until I purchased it around 5 years ago. The service records show lots of maintenance done, including a drain and refill of the trans fluid ever about 35k miles since new. So, I'm really happy now and going to keep doing mine every 50k. I would say with 120k, you should do a drain and fill. I'd do just one (which was my plan as well until I saw the service history). Mine was well maintained and it shifted perfect before hand, same after.

    • @earthling1984
      @earthling1984 6 днів тому

      @@deep1983 And just to second what I said, your vehicle is still newer, just 6 years old. Does have more miles than average. Now would be a good time to start doing trans drains and flushes every interval you choose (maybe every 3 years, or ever 40k, whatever). But stay on it now, and you'll make it last.

    • @FastFixYouTube
      @FastFixYouTube 6 днів тому

    Bravo on the video and the tips. Same thing, my snap rings and shims were not really correct or good quality, so I reused the old ones. Works like a charm. I have had this job quoted at local shops ranging from $800 to $1200. But each guy, said "if you are at all handy, the parts are about $50, and a good afternoon of work". Let me tell you, this has not been hard labourious work, no big bolts or anything, but it is very finely detailed, precise, and hard to reach, and need the right tools. It can be very frustrating, and I had to walk away before I got too pissed off a few times. BUt overall, very doable for a DIYer and saves you about $1000!

    Unrelated to this particular video I had a question about your foxbody gt40 head installation. The color on the top of your pistons before you cleaned them looks very similar to mine. I thought I had a blown head gsk or cracked engine. But after seeing your video maybe it's all good on mine? Had everything magnafluxed and all is good then I thought bad gas but again you didn't even mention that color on yours so again I guess nothing to worry about. No antifreeze and oil mixed plus the cylinders are dry with some burnt oil and that funky bronze color. Thanks for the videos.

    • @FastFixYouTube
      @FastFixYouTube 6 днів тому

      Hello! Good question/observation on the piston condition. Honestly, I was pretty surprised at the amount of carbon that were on the Pistons. I hadn’t ran that engine for more than 5000 miles before I swapped to the GT40s. I’m not quite sure why they had that amount of carbon buildup, but it might be because I removed the smog equipment, or there’s more recirculated oil that goes into the heads than I wasn’t aware of. It’s really hard to say, but I feel like it’s an issue or perhaps normal operation of exhaust gases that get recirculated into the engine which obviously have a little bit of oil in them. I’m going to crack that engine open again in the next few months and will see what condition they’re in. I wish I could give you more specifics, but I am kind of loss just as you are. I don’t think you were risking anything by reassembling everything and running it as you had before, but it might be a good idea to run premium fuel and maybe add some injector/valve cleaner through the gas every once in a while.

    Great vid. Always turn or replace rotors, never just pad swap. Since you only do brakes every 50-60k miles you will be asking for probs, vibrations, or noise if you don't take care of the rotor. Shop down the street from me will turn rotors off the car for $25 a pop, just call around your area. Much better than replacing for $100 plus if there is plenty of metal left.

    DO NOT DO THIS ON AN 8TH GEN CIVIC SI. There is very little clearance. You cannot reach the middle of the alternator as there is a piece of metal in the way that is holding the windshield fluid reservoir. Just have the refrigerant flushed out and remove the whole compressor. You will save yourself a lot of time and pain. Great video, just wish I knew this before spending waaaay to long hunched over trying to copy.

      Oh man! Sorry this didn’t work for your Si…. I know others have asked, but I never knew if it’d work or not. Know we know! Thanks for commenting and relaying the info 👍👍👍

    Excellent video mate, really very well made and easy to follow. I made the mistake of vacuuming up some gypsum dust, which resulted in the intermittent shutting off issue. I'll be tearing this unit down today. Thanks again!

    I didn't even need the screwdriver! I removed the top and used my tub plunger, and the water went straight down. Thank you so much.

      It's a hole saw. Green means it's Menards house brand, MasterCraft I believe.

    If you are not sure which way the boot should go on look at the old one to see if there are any markings such as manufacturer or even a part number scribed on the boot. With genuine Toyota boots ,the markings face out. I will be doing this job soon using genuine honda and will report back

    My technique when installing the piston and boot is to place a towel on my lap, place the caliper with the opening facing out ,then use both hands to guide the piston in. Your tummy acts like a back brace.

    Once you get that many miles its safer to just leave it instead of new fluid because some of thst grime might be helping clutches grip and if the new fluid cleanse that stuff out your transmission might start slipping

    • @FastFixYouTube
      @FastFixYouTube 6 днів тому

      Hello. Yes, that is the concern although I’ve mostly heard that flushing The fluid out is the primary reason for the clutch discs to start to slip. As you say the grime acts as abrasive material for those worn out clutches. In my experience draining and filling, usually gets a good result or a neutral result, so I think it’s really up to the individual on what they want to do considering the condition of their transmission. Good advice!
